Brandenburg Gate

As prize winners in the Their Past Your Future Commemorative Visits Competition 2005, pupils from Harrogate Grammar School travelled to Berlin to explore German attitudes to the history of the Second World War and the approaches the nation has taken to reconcile itself with the Nazi period of rule and to the presentation of this history. The visit included also an exploration of the German approach to reconciliation through politics and education, and a study of how the German nation chooses to commemorate those who fought and died during the conflict. Pupils are pictured standing in front of one of the most famous symbols of Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate.  A Holocaust memorial, with an attached ‘Information Centre’ opened next to the Brandenburg Gate in May 2005.
