Members of the Kinder Children’s Choirs of the High Peak travelled to Normandy as the only British voluntary organisation actively participating in the official sixtieth anniversary programme of events to commemorate the Battle of Normandy. Singing at key commemorative concerts and services, including at St. Lo Cathedral and the American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, the group also visited key historical sites, museums and memorials. The mixture of participation in official events of commemoration and remembrance, and educational activities based around key sites and talking with people of different nationalities who had lived and fought through the Battle of Normandy, allowed the group to explore the diversity of experience of the Second World War, and to gain an understanding of the sacrifices made and the value and importance of commemoration.
Historical Information Historical Information
On 6 June 1944 the biggest combined naval, military and air operation ever seen took place. Code-named Operation Overlord, the D-Day landings saw Allied forces mount a daring invasion of Nazi territory, along the Normandy coast in France. The operation marked the start of the campaign that led to eventual Allied victory in Europe.
