Intergenerational learning

Intergenerational learning through Their Past Your Future adds a dynamic new dimension to finding out about the Second World War, the impact that the war had on those who lived through it, and its lasting impact on people and places today.

The Partnerships Scheme gives young people a unique and vanishing opportunity to meet people who remember living through some of the most important and influential events in our recent history. It also presents young people with the opportunity to interact with and make a meaningful contribution to their local community.

Inspiring Learning for All

As well as improving historical understanding and contributing towards Citizenship in schools, Their Past Your Future partnership activities provide an ideal way for working towards informal learning objectives such as increasing creativity, motivation to learn and self-confidence.

Learning through the Partnerships Scheme can therefore be evaluated using Inspiring Learning for All, a set of qualitative criteria based on a framework for access and learning in the museums, libraries and archives sector, developed by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council for England (MLA). For further information visit Inspiring Learning for All.

Generic Learning Outcomes for the Partnerships Scheme

Inspiring Learning for All consists of Generic Learning Outcomes against which informal and experiential learning can be measured. Change in an individual in any of the areas listed below under the five main Generic Learning Outcome headings, constitutes learning as a result of the activities experienced through the Partnerships Scheme.

Knowledge and Understanding

  • A deeper understanding of the variety and diversity of people’s experiences of war, and of the impact on their lives;
  • An understanding of the unique nature of veterans’ wartime contribution to the upholding of democracy in the face of tyranny;
  • An understanding that people’s experiences of war were individual and personal, and had a long term impact on their subsequent lives and environments;
  • An understanding that 2004-05 is the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and as such probably the last official large-scale commemoration whilst its veterans and Home Front participants are still alive and able to take part in events.

Skills

  • Developing relationships with peers and with older and younger people, and developing skills to facilitate these relationships;
  • Developing skills to encourage learning in social, informal and personal ways;
  • Learning new skills to use digital equipment, and improving existing ones.

Values, Attitudes and Feelings

  • A greater motivation to learn about the past and its relevance to the present and future;
  • For all participants, a fuller appreciation of themselves – of their achievements and their relationship and own identity with their communities;
  • A deeper sense of understanding for people of different ages, races, religious experiences and backgrounds to themselves, and a positive appreciation of diversity;
  • Valuing the sacrifice and contribution made by the veterans of the Second World War;
  • An appreciation of their own, their family’s, or their community’s identity and past.

Creativity, Inspiration and Enjoyment

  • Young people and veterans learning to express themselves in different, creative and enjoyable ways;
  • Making lateral connections between their own lives and experiences, and those of other people.

Behaviour and Progression

  • Participating in commemorative, community events for the first time;
  • Working collaboratively with others as part of a team;
  • Behaving with more confidence.
