Pupils from Ursuline High School, Wimbledon, travelled to the Lazio region of Italy to attend the sixtieth anniversary commemorations of the Battle of Monte Cassino and to learn more about the battle’s significance within the broader history of the Second World War.

The Abbey of Monte Cassino, lies above the town of Cassino 1700 feet above sea level. Founded in 529AD, almost 1500 years ago, the Abbey has been a place of worship, a refuge for pilgrims, a centre for art and culture and a hotly contested trophy of war. The Abbey of Monte Cassino occupied a strategically vital ridge that marked the edge of the German defences - the 'Gustav Line'. It was bombed by Allied forces in 1944 and became the focal point of four individual battles that comprise the Battle of Monte Cassino.

Anzio Beachhead Museum opened in January 1994, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Anzio landings. It is located in one of the ground floor rooms of the 17th century Villa Adele, in the centre of the town near the railway station. The museum comprises of one room exhibiting artefacts, photographs and uniforms of veterans who found here during the Second World War.

Anzio War Cemetery contains 1,056 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War. The site for this cemetery was selected shortly after the landings at Anzio. Those buried here were casualties that fell soon after the landings in January 1944.

A Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery, Beach Head War Cemetery contains casualties of the fighting around the Anzio Beach Head. The cemetery was originally close to a casualty clearing station. Burials were made direct from the battlefield after the landings at Anzio in January 1944. In all, the cemetery contains 2,313 graves, 291 of them unknown and most of them from the U.K, followed by Canada.

Cassino War Cemetery was the focus for the official service of remembrance marking the sixtieth anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino (17 May 2004). This cemetery is the largest Second World War cemetery in Italy. The soldiers buried here lost their lives in some of the fiercest fighting in Italy around Cassino and the monastery on top of the ridge. The Cassino Memorial is situated in this cemetery. It contains 4265 grave markers of soldiers who died in battles against the Germany arm. There are 855 Canadians buried there.
