The TPYF funding programme for UK Education Authorities has now closed.
The small grants scheme was part of the £10m Their Past Your Future programme and made £2.3m of funding available to UK education authorities. The funding was to allow education authorities to provide unique opportunities for young people to engage in commemoration and reflect upon the impact of the Second World War on the UK and the people who lived through it.
Of the 209 education authorities across the UK, 148 were awarded a grant. Grants ranged in value from £2,000 to £50,000.
Types of activities eligible under the TPYF scheme included

Some examples of some notable activities that schools organised under the TPYF scheme
- Pupils from a school in Leeds attended the International Citizenship Conference in Lille, France.
- Blackpool LEA organised a week long event at a local Odeon cinema to show old Pathe newsreels which included “sights, sounds and smells” from the Second World War. All schools across the LEA were invited to attend. The event was enormously successful and attended by local dignitaries as well as pupils.
- A school in Brighton and Hove re-constructed an Anderson shelter as part of their activities. The shelter has now become a permanent exhibition.
- A number of schools across North Lanarkshire hosted a mixture of successful commemorative concerts and veterans tea parties in which pupils were given the opportunity to record veterans’ testimonies. These events fostered strong links between local veterans organisations and schools and has led to a keen interest in making the events annual occurrences.
- A school within Suffolk LEA has recorded interviews with local veterans of the Second World War and made them available through a dedicated website. This can be viewed at http://www.hitchams.suffolk.sch.uk/wwii/index.htm
- A school within Buckinghamshire County Council LEA has recorded local information on their school website about impact of the war on Chesham various activities they have undertaken through the TPYF scheme. This can be viewed at: http://www.cheshamatwar.com
