Health and Safety

The Their Past Your Future Commemorative Visits Programme has taken UK school pupils and youth group members to a wide variety of destinations in Europe and beyond to learn about the events and impact of the Second World War.

Our trips have featured visits to historical sites, battlefields, war cemeteries and memorials, museums, and towns and cities particularly affected by the events of the conflict, as well as official 60th anniversary commemorative events.

During all visits the paramount consideration for the organisers has been the health and safety of all participants. Thorough preparation is the key to ensuring that visits run as smoothly as possible. Circulating pre-prepared guidelines on health and safety measurements to all group participants prior to travel helps ensure that all members are fully briefed on their own responsibilities. Guidelines circulated to TPYF Commemorative Visit participants include advice on pupil behaviour, transport considerations, accommodation and supervision.

Our health and safety guidelines are designed to be suggestions for safeguarding the health of those people participating in educational visits, and are not a definitive list.

Guidance is based on the varied insights and experiences we have gained from running the TPYF Commemorative Visits Programme, but many good practice principles are also taken from the Department for Education and Skills (England) publication Good Practice Guide for Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits (HASPEV). The DfES HASPEV guidelines are also approved by the relevant education authorities in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. A full version of the HASPEV good practice guide is available from the Teachernet website
